A Mile in Your Honor

I’m tackling my fifth half marathon in less than a month.

My first goal was to finish the race (despite an awful bike accident the week of the race).

My second goal was to get a PR (and it ended up being the worse race ever).

My third goal was to get a PR (AND I  DID!)

My fourth goal was to survive (I was battling an injury the entire course).

My fifth goal- this year- is to again, get a PR. The one that I’ve been striving for ever since I first started:

I want to finish the race in 2:45 or less.

So, I’m mixing up my race strategy.

First – I’m running two-10 mile milers during training (previously, I’ve only done a 10 miler ONCE – if at all!).

Second (and relative to this blog post)- I’m listening to music throughout the entire race, which I've never done before...However, I’m thinking the music might keep me motivated and inspire me to run harder.

Here is how you can help…email me, facebook me, tweet me, or comment below THREE SONGS!

Why three songs? Well, it should take me about 3 songs to complete a mile!

Explain why you picked those songs for me and I’ll add them to my playlist. While running, I’ll think of you and why you picked these songs for me!  So, in a way- you’ll be with me during my half marathon.

I’ll post my final playlist before the race- stay tuned!

Much love,
Ashley

  1. Fight Like A Brave-Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Seven Nation Army-White Stripes
Toccata-Trans Siberian Orchestra, from Night Castle CD

The first is obvious...you are a brave warrior, fighting thru each mile to reach your goal!

The second, again, thru blood, sweat, and tears, you have trained for this event and it would take a seven nation army to hold you back.

Third, this instrumental is so powerful! It has the spooky opening organ which is perfect for the Halloween time of year, then it builds to a rockin guitar jam ending with fighter plans screaming into the distance. You should feel energized and jet powered with this one!

I would say good luck, but I know you will be ready and you won't need luck, just will and determination! Go Ashley!

  2. A few come to mind:

Renegades of Funk - Rage Against the Machine: "No matter how hard you try you can't stop us now..."

Run This Town - Jay-Z: Title sort of says it all.

God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash: Strange, I know. Mainly love the relentless thundering beat. I like it early on in a run.

  3. Okay, here goes. Please be aware that I have unique taste in running music; I tend to listen to slower music that puts most people to sleep. So I tried to pick out some things you might like.

    1. This Is How We Do It - Montell Jordan.
Impossible not to be happy with this song on.

    2. Dog Days Are Over - Florence + The Machine
The refrain is "Run fast for x...", so you can't beat that. Plus I love the message in how I read it. Training for a race truly is the "dog days". On race day, your training is over. The race is the reward, and you should remind yourself of that and enjoy it.

    3. Let's Go - Matt & Kim
I love running to these two. Very upbeat. Reminds me of your personality.

  4. Eminem - "Till I Collapse"
    Kanye & Jay-Z - "Ni**as in Paris"
    Psy - "Gangnam Style"

1-Good beat and lyrics that motivate you to not give up.
2-Just a bad ass beat to run to
3-When you're hurting and tired, just play Gangnam Style to perk you up (and think of my killer dance moves).

  6. Here are a few that keep me going. This is a power mix, straight from my own playlist:

Born This Way - Lady GaGa
This song makes you feel good about yourself, and reminds you that you're awesome and being who you're supposed to be!

I'm Sexy and I Know it - LMFAO
I mean, who couldn't feel awesome about themselves while listening to this song? It literally makes me feel like the sexiest beast on the planet. Running is sexy.

Because We Can - Fatboy Slim
This is a slightly strange selection because the song is a little weird. I won't be offended if you want me to pick a different song, but this song got me through the end of my first 5k. It was over 100 degrees, and I felt like I was going to die! Then this song came on my shuffle, and a lot of the song just repeats, "Because I can, can, can!" ...and I just tuned everything else in my brain OUT and kept repeating it to myself: BECAUSE I CAN CAN CAN! ...and then I finished. So anyway, there's the story. I hope it helps and you enjoy it :)
